A Very, Very Sad Photo

I saw this photo at the "Best journalism Photos of 2007" website, it had no story to go with it. Maybe no words were needed. I just could not get him out of my mind. It reminds me of how lucky we are to be living in the United States and how rich we are, despite what we think we need. We have riches beyond this little boys imagination. It's painful to view. Still, I thought it should be posted on this site.

As a parent, a father, I cannot imagine the pain, anguish and shame, this little boy's parents must feel, if they are alive, seeing their child like this. How can we help? What can we do? Are children like him beyond our help? It hurts. When you pray today, say a prayer for this boy, and all the other children like him. When your kids complain about what they don't have, show them this picture. It is beyond humbling.

THE FIGHT AGAINST FEAR- HEWBREWS 2:9-18 ******************************************

IN HIS LANDMARK BOOK "THE DENIAL OF DEATH,"AUTHOR AND ANTHROPOLOGIEST ERNEST BECKER ARGUES THAT ALL OF OUR ANXIETIES AND FEARS ARE ROOTED IN OUR DREAD OF DEATH. ALTHOUGH BECKER WAS NOT A CHRIST-FOLLOWER, HIS SCHOLARLY STUDY COULD SERVE AS A COMMENTARY ON HEBREWS 2, WHICH TELLS US THAT IN OUR NATURAL STATE WE ARE SUBJECT TO THE FEAR OF DEATH THROUGHOUT LIFE.

WE ALL KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT FEAR. AND CERTAINLY THE MEN AND WOMEN WE MEET IN THE BIBLE WERE SUBJECT TO FEAR, RANGING FROM A MERE TREMOR OF ANXIETY ALL THE WAY TO TERRIFYING PANIC. BUT THERE IS NEVER A NEED TO PANIC EVEN IN THE FACE OF DEATH. OUT LORD HAS EXPERIENCED AND CONQUERED IT.!

THE AUTHOR OF HEBREWS TELLS US THAT JESUS "WAS MADE A LITTLE LOWER THAN THE ANGELS,...THAT HE, BY THE GRACE OF GOD, MIGHT TASTE DEATH FOR EVERYONE". THROUGH HIS DEATH CHRIST HAS DEFEATED "HIM WHO HAD THE POWER OF DEATH, THAT IS, THE DEVIL," GRANTING US OUR "RELEASE" FROM THE "FEAR OF DEATH"
(HEBREWS 2:14-15).

ARE YOU VICTIMIZED BY YOUR FEARS? RECALL THE WONDERFUL DREAD-DISPELLING PROMISE OF SCRIPTURE; "FEAR NOT, FOR I AM WITH YOU; BE NOT DISMAYED, FOR I AM YOUR GOD. I WILL STRENGTHEN YOU. YES, I WILL HELP YOU, I WILL UPHOLD YOU WITH MY RIGHTEOUS RIGHT HAND" (ISA. 41:10).

WHEN I FEAR MY FAITH WILL FAIL,
CHRIST WILL HOLD ME FAST;
WHEN THE TEMPTER WOULD PREVAIL,
HE WILL HOLD ME FAST.

IF YOU BELIEVE THAT JESUS LIVES, YOU DON'T NEED TO FEAR DEATH. HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT TIME WITH ANOTHER INSPERATIONAL MESSAGE FROM GOD.

FACE-TO-FACE - ISAIAH 6:1-10

BEING FACE-TO-FACE WITH FAMOUS PEOPLE CAN TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY. A PERSON CAN EASILY FEEL INADEQUATE WHEN TALKING WITH BIGGER-THAN-LIFE PEOPLE. WE CAN EVEN DEVELOP AN AWE AND RESPECT FOR ATHLETES AND OTHER STARS WHO MAKE US FEEL INSIGNIFICANT.

BUT THAT'S NOTHING WHEN COMPARED TO WHAT ISAIAH SAW "IN THE YEAR THAT KING UZZIAH DIED". ISAIAH EXPERIENCED SOMETHING SO MAGNIFICENT AND TERRIFYING THAT NOTHING COULD COMPARE TO IT -- HE STOOD FACE-TO-FACE WITH GOD!

IN A VISION, GOD SHOWED ISAIAH WHO HE REALLY WAS. WHAT THE PROPHET SAW GREATLY AFFECTED HIM. HE SAW GOD'S MAJESTY. HE GAINED A FRESH UNDERSTANDING OF GOD'S HOLINESS. HE SAW THE CONTRAST BETWEEN HIS SINFUL SELF AND GOD'S PERFECTION. HE HEARD GOD'S CALL TO SERVICE, AND HE ANSWERED IT.

TODAY, WE CAN SEE GOD IN HIS WORD AND IN THE SPIRIT'S WORK IN AND THROUGH US. AND WE CAN COMMUNE WITH HIM THROUGH PRAYER. BUT ONE DAY IN HEAVEN WE WILL SEE OUR LORD FACE-TO-FACE ( 1 JOHN 3:2). NOW THAT WILL TAKE OUR BREATH AWAY!

FACE TO FACE! O BLISSFUL MOMENT!
FACE TO FACE--TO SEE AND KNOW;
FACE TO FACE WITH MY REDEEMER-
JESUS CHRIST WHO LOVES ME SO.

GOD'S AWESOME PRESENCE IS BOTH CONVICTING AND COMFORTING. HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT TIME.

HAVE A HAPPY, BLESSED DAY*********

THE PHARMACIST - 2 SAMUEL 12:1-14

THE PHARMACIST HAD A GOOD REPUTATION. HE WAS A FAMILY MAN AND A GOOD BUSINESSMAN. NEWS REPORTS LISTED HIS WORTH IN THE MILLIONS. YET, TO INCREASE HIS PROFITS, THIS TRUSTED PROFESSIONAL BEGAN TO DILUTE THE STRENGTH OF THE CHEMOTHERAPY DRUGS HE WAS DISPENSING. HE WAS CAUGHT AND CONVICTED OF THE CRIME.

HE LEFT MANY HEALTH-CARE WORKERS ASKING, "HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN?" SOME OF THE SAME QUESTIONS MUST HAVE BEEN ASKED ABOUT KING DAVID. KNOWN AS A MAN AFTER GOD'S OWN HEART, HE USED THE POWER OF HIS OFFICE TO TAKE ANOTHER MAN'S WIFE (2 SAM. 11).

THEN HE CONSPIRED TO TAKE HER HUSBAND'S LIFE. THE MAN WHO DIED WAS ONE OF DAVID'S OWN MILITARY OFFICERS WHO WAS AWAY FROM HOME FIGHTING THE KING'S BATTLES.

WE COULD LOOK AT THE FAILURES OF WELL-KNOWN PEOPLE TO FEEL BETTER ABOUT OURSELVES. BUT IF WE FEEL GOOD ABOUT THE WRONGS OF OTHERS, WE DON'T KNOW OURSELVES. THE BIBLE DOESN'T TELL US ABOUT THE SINS OF DAVID TO WEAKEN OUR SENSE OF MORAL ALARM, BUT TO PUT ALL OF US ON NOTICE.

THE FAILURES OF OTHERS SHOULD CAUSE US TO BE MORE AWARE OF OUR OWN WEAKNESSES AND NEED FOR THE GRACE OF CHRIST. ONLY IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF OUR WEAKNESS WILL WE BE DEPENDENT ON THE STRENGTH OF OUR GOD.

THE BIBLE, O LORD, IS JUST LIKE A MIRROR
THAT SHOWS ME THE NEED OF MY HEART,
FOR IN IT I SEE AN ACCURATE IMAGE,
A PORTAIT OF ME--EVERY PART.

THE BIBLE IS A MIRROR THAT REFLECTS HOW GOD SEES US. HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT TIME.

Mini Reunion Weekend

Jeri and I met with Carol Herrington this Saturday at the Whittier Area Genealogy Society (WAGS) meeting at the Masonic Lodge in Uptown Whittier. We stayed and listened to an interesting lecture on Canadian genealogy research, which lasted a little over an hour. We had lunch at the California Grill, also in Uptown Whittier and had a chance to get to know each other over a good meal. Carol, as I mentioned in a earlier post, was married to the late John Garza, my 2nd cousin (sadly, I never knew him), John's mother was Emma De La O and her father was Manuel De La O. Manuel was the older brother of my grandfather Santiago De La O.

Carol gave us some photos; one photo of my grandfather Santiago at a young age playing in a band, along with my great uncles Manuel and Andres De La O, another photo was of a De La O family reunion in Trinidad, Colorado with Manuel's descendants, names included (a great photo), and lastly a photocopy of a very young Emma De La O as a bridesmaid in her cousin Elvira Martinez' wedding. Elvira was the daughter of Sarapia De La O Martinez, the sister of Manuel, and my grandfather Santiago. Elvira was raised by Manuel after the passing of Sarapia.

We really enjoyed meeting Carol. She has been very gracious and generous with us and is a wonderful person. We hope to continue a friendship with her. My only regret for the day was that Jeri and I forgot the camera in the truck. Such a great day and I forgot to take pictures.

The following day, Sunday, we were invited to brunch at Dave and Mary Kersey's home. Mary's father is Antonio (Tony) De La O, her grandfather is Guadalupe De La O and her great grandfather is Buenaventura De La O. Buenaventura is the brother of my great grandfather Rafael De La O. Buenaventura was a famed musician and teacher in New Mexico history and there is an article about him in the October 1963 issue of New Mexico Magazine, which I will try to post here at a later date. Also there were Mary's nephew Michael De La O and Michaels mother Fran. Fran was married to Mary's brother, the late Ruben De La O.

Our daughter Meranda was with us this time and it was a good thing too, because she remembered to take the camera down. I cannot say enough what a great day it was. We were immediately made to feel welcome by Dave and Mary and they are terrific people and hosts. The food was fantastic and Mary, true to her De La O roots is a terrific cook. She served Ortega Chile and Cheese Egg casserole, an out of this world potato and sausage dish, bacon, fruit, bread, champagne and beer. We spent the day getting to know each other, laughing and going over old photos and family stories. We enjoyed meeting everyone and could not have had a better day! I thought it very poignant when Mary made a toast to family. I could not help but think of my father and all our ancestors. I hope they are pleased by our efforts to find out about the past and to reunite with each other.

Below are photos taken at Dave and Mary's home in Diamond Bar, California (a beautiful home, by the way). The photos were taken by Michael and Meranda.

The Good Husband

Adam wakes up with a huge hangover after attending the Staff Christmas Party. Adam is not normally a drinker, but the drinks didn't taste like alcohol at all. He didn't even remember how he got home from the party. As bad as he was feeling, he wondered if he did something wrong. Adam had to force himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins next to a glass of water on the side table. And, next to them, a single red rose! Adam sits up and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed. He looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotlessly clean. So is the rest of the house. He takes the aspirins, cringes when he sees a huge black eye staring back at him in the bathroom mirror. Then he notices a note hanging on the corner of the mirror written in red with little hearts on it and a kiss mark from his wife in lipstick: "Honey, Breakfast is on the stove, I left early to get groceries to make you your favorite dinner tonight. I love you, darling! Love, Vicki".

He stumbles to the kitchen and sure enough, there is hot breakfast, steaming hot coffee and the morning newspaper. His son is also at the table, eating. Adam asks, "Son, what happened last night?" Well, you came home after 3 A.M., drunk and out of your mind. You fell over the coffee table and broke it, and then you puked in the hallway, and got that black eye when you ran into the door. Confused, he asked his son, "So, why is everything in such perfect order and so clean? I have a rose, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me?" His son replies, "Oh THAT! Mom dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off, you screamed "Leave me alone, I'm Married!!"

Broken Coffee Table $239.99.

Hot Breakfast $4.20.

Two Aspirins $.38.

GETTING THROUGH - PSALM 46************

GONE ARE THE DAYS WHEN A REAL PERSON GREETS YOU ON THE OTHER END OF A PHONE CALL. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH WHENEVER WE TRY TO "REACH OUT AND TOUCH SOMEONE," WE ARE GREETED WITH A COMPUTERIZED VOICE.

I'M GLAD THIS ISN'T TRUE OF OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN. HI IS ALWAYS THERE. NO VOICE-MAIL BOXES, NO "PRESS 2 FOR MORE GRACE" AND NO "CALL WAITING" INTERRUP-
TIONS.

THANKFULLY, "CALL TO ME, AND I WILL ANSWER YOU" (JER. 33:3) HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED BY, "ALL LINES ARE NOW BUSY. YOUR CALL IS IMPORTANT TO ME. PLEASE STAY ON THE LINE." YET I WONDER WHAT KIND OF ACCESS HE HAS TO US?

COMMUNICATION WITH GOD IS A TWO-WAY STREET. HE SPEAKS TO US THROUGH HIS WORD WHEN WE COME ATTENTIVELY BEFORE HIM IN PRAYER AND THROUGH THE CLEAR VOICE OF THE INDWELLING SPIRIT.

HE PAID A GREAT PRICE TO KEEP THE LINES OPEN SO THAT WE CAN EXPERIENCE THE JOY OF BEING STILL LONG ENOUGH TO KNOW THAT HE IS GOD. (PSALM 46:10) LIKE THE HYMN "IN THE GARDEN" SAYS:

AND HE WALKS WITH ME, AND HE TALKS WITH ME,
AND HE TELLS ME I AM HIS OWN;
AND THE JOY WE SHARE AS WE TARRY THERE,
NONE OTHER HAS EVER KNOWN.

THE JOY OF HEARING HIS VOICE IS A CALL YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS! IS GOD GETTING THROUGH TO YOU? HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT TIME.

FATHER, FORGIVE THEM-LUKE 23:32-38

A 12 YEAR OLD BOY ON A SCHOOL TRIP TO A MUSEUM STUCK A WAD OF CHEWING GUM ON A PAINTING WORTH $1.5 MILLION. THE GUM LEFT A STAIN ABOUT THE SIZE OF A QUARTER ON HELEN FRANKENTHALER"S LANDMARK ABSTRACT, "THE BAY."

OFFICIALS AT THE DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS WERE UNSURE WHETHER THEY COULD REMOVE IT. THE BOY WAS SUSPENDED FROM SCHOOL. "I DON'T THINK HE UNDERSTOOD THE RAMIFICATIONS OF WHAT HE DID," SAID A SCHOOL OFFICIAL.

IN LUKE 23, JESUS PRAYED A POWERFUL PRAYER FOR PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T UNERSTAND THE CONSEQUENCES OF WHAT THEY WERE DOING. HE ASKD HIS FATHER TO FORGIVE THOSE WHO WERE PUTTING HIM TO DEATH. (VERSE 34)

THEY DEVALUED GOD'S SON-FLOGGING HIM, SPITTING ON HIM, RIDICULING HIM, AND PLACING A CROWN OF THORNS ON HIS HEAD. THEY DROVE SPIKES THROUGH HIS HANDS AND FEET AND PIERCED HIS SIDE.

ALTHOUGH THEY DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THE FULL SCOPE OF THEIR ACTIONS, THROUGH THE DEATH OF HIS SON, JESUS, GOD OFFERS FORGIVENESS TO ALL WHO REPENT AND BELIEVE-EVEN TO JESUS' MURDERERS.

BECAUSE OF OUR SIN, WE ALL PLAYED A PART IN PUTTING JESUS TO DEATH. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT GOD IS GRACIOUS. HE WILL FORGIVE AND REMOVE THE STAIN OF SIN AND GIVE US A SECOND CHANCE THROUGH HIS SON.

NO ONE IS TOO BAD FOR GOD'S FORGIVENESS-BUT IT MUST BE ACCEPTED. THANK YOU LORD. HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT TIME.

NO EXCUSES*********

PEOPLE HAVE MANY DIFFERENT REASONS FOR REJECTING THE GOSPEL. A COMMON ONE IS TO BLAME CHRISTIANS FOR SOMETHING THEY DID OR DID NOT DO. THESE CRITICS SAY, "I KNOW A CHRISTIAN WHO TREATED ME POORLY." OR, "I WENT TO CHURCH, AND NO ONE TALKED TO ME."

INDEED, CHRISTIANS AREN'T PERFECT, AND MANY CAN BE BAD EXAMPLES. BUT BLAMING OTHERS DOESN'T REMOVE ONE'S ACCOUNTABILITY TO GOD.

THE TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL DOES NOT DEPEND ON THE WAY OTHERS LIVE OUT THEIR FAITH. SALVATION IS ABOUT JESUS ALONE. ROMANS 10:9 SAYS, "IF YOU CONFESS WITH YOUR MOUTH THE LORD JESUS AND BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART THAT GOD HAS RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD, YOU WILL BE SAVED."

SOME PEOPLE MAY USE CHRISTIANS AS AN EXCUSE TO REJECT THE GOSPEL. BUT THEY CERTAINLY CAN'T POINT A FINGER OF BLAME AT JESUS. HE IS SINLESS AND PERFECT IN EVERY WAY. PONTIUS PILOT SAID OF HIM, "I HAVE FOUND NO FAULT IN THIS MAN" (LUKE 23:14).

JESUS DID WHAT NO ONE ELSE COULD DO--HE SUFFERED DEATH ON A CROSS TO PROVIDE SALVATION FOR ALL WHO BELIEVE IN HIM. THAT MAKES IT TOUGH FOR SOMEONE TO SAY, "I'M NOT GOING TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN BECAUSE I DON'T LIKE WHAT JESUS DID."

DON'T GET SIDETRACKED BY LOOKING AT THE FAULTS OF OTHERS. LOOK TO JESUS. HE ALONE IS THE WAY TO HEAVEN.

HE IS THE WAY, THE TRUTH, THE LIFE--
THAT ONE WHOSE NAME IS JESUS;
THERE IS NO OTHER NAME ON EARTH
THAT HAS THE POWER TO SAVE US.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR SAYING "NO" TO CHRIST. HE LOVES US SO MUCH AND SO DO I. HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT TIME.

BIMS-CHANGING HISTORY******

TODAY WHEN WE CAN MAKE INTERNATIONAL CELL-PHONE CALLS, SEND WORLD-WIDE EMAIL, AND DOWNLOAD IMAGES FROM SPACE ON OUR COMPUTERS, IT'S DIFFICULT TO IMAGINE THE IMPACT OF ONE SMALL SATELLITE THE SIZE OF A BASKETBALL.

BUT ON OCTOBER 4, 1957, THE SOVIET UNION'S LAUNCHING OF SPUTNIK 1, THE WORLDS FIRST ARTIFICIAL SATELLITE, USHERED IN THE MODERN SPACE AGE AND CHANGED THE COURSE OF HISTOY.

NATIONS RUSHED TO CATCH UP, TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELPMENT ACCELERATED, AND FEAR ALTERNATED WITH HOPE ABOUT THE MEANING OF IT ALL FOR HUMANITY.

EVENTS THAT ALTER THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE SOMETIMES OCCUR IN OBSCURITY. THAT WAS TRUE OF THE BIRTH OF JESUS--JUST ONE BABY, BORN TO AN ORDINARY COUPLE IN A SMALL TOWN. BUT IT CHANGED THE COURSE OF HISTORY.

THE WORDS OF AN ANGEL SPOKEN TO SHEPHERDS BEGAN TO SPREAD: "THERE IS BORN TO YOU THIS DAY IN THE CITY OF DAVID A SAVIOR, WHO IS CHRIST THE LORD" (LUKE 2:11). NINETEEN CENTURIES LATER, PHILLIPS BROOKS WROTE OF BETHLEHEM, "THE HOPES AND FEARS OF ALL THE YEARS ARE MET IN THEE TONIGHT."

WHEN WE OPEN OUR LIVES TO CHRIST THE LORD AND ACKNOWLEDGE HIM AS OUR SAVIOR, THE COURSE OF OUR FUTURE HISTORY IS CHANGED FOR TIME AND ETERNITY. THESE "GOOD TIDINGS OF GREAT JOY" ARE FOR EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE.

THE TURNING POINT IN HISTORY
OCCUREED ONE NIGHT IN BETHLEHEN:
AND SHEPHERDS SPREAD THE GLORIOUS NEWS
THE ANGEL HAD ANNOUNED TO THEM.

THE HINGE OF HISTORY IS FOUND ON THE DOOR OF A BETHLEHEM STABLE. JESUS DIED FOR OUR SINS. HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT TIME.

WANDERING FROM WISDOM

IF GOD OFFERED YOU ANYTHING YOU WANTED, WHAT WOULD YOU ASK FOR? WHEN SOLOMAN WAS GIVEN THAT CHOICE, HE ASKED FOR THE WISDOM TO DISCERN GOOD FROM EVIL SO THAT HE MIGHT LEAD GOD'S PEOPLE WELL (1 INGS 3:9).

" BECAUSE YOU HAVE ASKED THIS THING," GOD TOLD SOLOMON, "I HAVE DONE ACCORDING TO YOUR WORDS." HE EVEN PROMISED TO GIVE HIM "BOTH RICHES AND HONOR". TO THIS DAY, SOLOMON IS REMEMBERED FOR THE GREAT WISDOM GOD GAVE HIM.

SOLOMON BEGAN HIS RULE WITH DEVOTION TO WISDOM AND A DEEP AMBITION TO BUILD A MAGNIFICENT TEMPLE TO HONOR GOD. BUT SOMETHING HAPPENED ALONG THE WAY. HIS PASSION FOR LIVING BY GOD'S WISDOM WAS DISPLACED BY THE ALLURES OF THE WEALTH AND POSITION GOD HAD GIVEN HIM. HIS MARRIAGE TO FOREIGN WOMEN WHO WORSHIPED PAGAN GODS EVENTUALLY LED HIM--AND ULTIMATELY THE NATION--INTO IDOLATRY.

THE LESSON IS CLEAR. KEEPING OUR LOVE FOR CHRIST AND HIS WISDOM IS A PRIMARY OBJECTIVE FOR THOSE OF US WHO WANT TO LIVE TO SATISFY GOD THROUGHOUT THE COURSE OF OUR LIFE. A COMMITMENT TO FOLLOWING THE RICHES OF GOD'S WISDOM WILL ENABLE US TO AVOID THE DRIFT THAT DESTROYED SOLOMAN. KEEP YOUR HEART IN TUNE WITH GOD'S WISDOM AND OBEY HIS VOICE. THAT'S THE WAY TO FINISH WELL.

PRONE TO WANDER, LORD, I FEEL IT,
PRONE TO LEAVE THE GOD I LOVE;
HERE'S MY HEART, O TAKE AND SEAL IT,
SEAL IT FOR THY COURT ABOVE.

MONITOR YOUR HEART DAILY TO AVOID WANDERING FROM GOD'S WISDOM. HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT TIME

Home Cooking

Jeri made this dinner this past weekend and wanted to share it with you. These are from her personal recipes that she developed over the years. They are guaranteed. The secret to both of these dishes is long, slow simmering.

Jeri’s Red Chile Pot Roast

3 - 4 lbs Beef Chuck, shoulder or similar cut of beef.

1 can heated beef broth, preferably Swanson’s

1 Medium white onion, quartered.

2 Cloves of Garlic

3 carrots , sliced

4 Serrano chilies

3 rounded tablespoons of New Mexico red chile powder

1 Can of tomato paste

1 bay leaf (optional)

Salt & Pepper to taste

Season the meat with salt and pepper and brown the meat in hot oil until all sides are brown and the red is gone. Add the onion , garlic, carrots, Serrano chilies bay leaf and Red Chile powder. Bring to a boil, then lower the flame and simmer for 3 hours. Check periodically to make sure the liquid has not evaporated. Add a little water to the broth as needed. Add the tomato paste in the last hour. When the meat is fully cooked take the meat out of the pot, letting the sauce continue to boil, and roughly chop and coarsely shred it. Return the meat to the sauce and stir carefully so as not to break the chilies. The sauce should have a gravy like consistency. It is ready to serve.

Pinto Beans with Smoked Pork

1 Small bag of pinto beans

1 Smoked pork shank

1 Medium onion, quartered or roughly chopped

2 Serrano chilies, whole

Salt & pepper to taste

Clean and wash the beans. Place the smoked pork shank in the pot, add the beans and the rest of the ingredients and cover completely with water. Bring the beans to a boil and then lower the flame and simmer for 2 ½ to 3 hours, Stirring and adding water as needed. Stir carefully to avoid breaking the Serrano chilies. Remove the meat from the bones before serving. Serve this with the Red Chile Pot Roast and Tortillas.

Family History

As I age, the past becomes more important to me. I think about my parents, their parents and all the generations that came before them, and with the exception of the last few generations, they have all been forgotten, and I cannot help but think how sad that is. It is not only sad, it is wrong. They deserve to be remembered. They lived and loved just as we do now. They worked, toiled, played, failed and succeeded, raised families and had dreams, only to be forgotten by time. I cannot accept that. I see the value in our ancestors. Our children and their children deserve to know who they were, they deserve to know where they came from. We would not be here but for the fact that our ancestors came before us.

I never knew my father’s father, my grandfather Santiago Madrid De La O, or at least I don’t remember him, he died when I was one year old. What I do know, I learned by listening to my father. My mother’s father, Augustine “Auggie” Osuna, was not around much when I was growing up. I saw him a only a few times in my life. Perhaps that is the driving force behind my desire to spend so much time with my own grandchildren, to love them and give them memories that will last a lifetime. The only grandmother in my life was my grandma Mary, who shared her love freely with all her grandchildren. I know I speak for my brother and sister, and all the cousins when I say that we have never forgotten her, She lives in all of us. She was and is blessing in our lives. My father’s mother, my grandmother Gumesinda, was a stranger to me. My father did not have a good relationship with his mother, so consequently, by default, neither did I. I only saw her a handful of times in my life. My children grew up without a grandfather as well, at least not with my father. He passed just weeks before my oldest daughter Meranda’s third birthday, and though I strive to keep his memory alive, the reality is, my other children never knew him. They did however have my wife Jeri’s father, their Grandpa Huizar (Henry Huizar) in their life when they were younger, and they have not forgotten him, nor should they. They are blessed to have had both of their grandmothers in their lives; their Grandma Huizar, who has since passed, and their Grandma “Grannie Annie” De La O.

I am slowly becoming obsessed with knowing the past. I have one goal in mind and it is what drives me. It is to bequeath my children, and their children’s children, a legacy. How wonderful would it be to have first hand knowledge of our ancestors told in their own words. As a Hispanic American of Mexican descent, I want to know who the first ancestor was that came from Spain, and on the other hand as a Mexican American, what native blood, if any, is in me. As a descendant of New Mexicans that have been in this country for centuries, I want their stories told, and I want them heard. I want to now what they ate, where they lived, what type of work they did. I want them to be remembered. My wife is a Tejana, what stories are in her family history? We should all want to know!

I have been told that I have a photographic memory regarding the past. Well, I don’t know about that, but yes, I do have a good memory about the past. Maybe because it was such a good one. No ones life is perfect and mine certainly is no exception, but it was and is a good life. I want my grandchildren to know about my life growing up, with both my sister and my younger brother , warts and all. They should know about the days growing up with all my cousins on both sides of the family. How lucky we all were to have each other. They should know about the aunts and uncles that made up our lives when we were growing up! It should be ingrained in their genetic memory, in their spiritual DNA.

HELLO FRIENDS;
I AM OUT OF THE HOSPITAL AND AM HOME NOW. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRAYERS. THEY HELPED.

LEAD THEM TO THE CROSS;

MANY HEART-TOUCHING STORIES WERE CIRCULATED AFTER THE TERRORIST ATACKS ON THE WORLD TRADE CENTER ON SEPTEMBER 11,2001. NONE SEEMS MORE SPIRITUALLY SIGNIFICANT THAN THAT OF IRON WORKER FRANK SILECCHIA. AS HE WAS HELPING TO RECOVER BODIES, FRANK NOTICED TWO STEEL BEAMS IN THE SHAPE OF A CROSS STANDING UPRIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF ALL THE DEBRIS.

APPOINTING HIMSELF AS THE CURATOR OF THAT STRIKING SYPMBOL OF GOD'S LOVE, HE OFTEN TOOK HEARTBROKEN VISITORS TO SEE IT. MANY OF THEM SERE COMFORED BY THE SILENT TESTEMONY TO THE DIVINE PESENCE IN THE WORST OF TRAGEDIES. ONE DAY WHEN JOURNALIST BARBARA WALTERS CAME WITH TEARFUL FRIENDS WHO HAD LOST A SON IN THE CATASTRPHE, FRANK SIMPLY LED THEM TO THE CROSS.

THE ANSWER TO THE WORLD'S TERRIBLE PAIN AND EVIL IS NOT AN ARGUMENT OR A THEOLOGCAL TREATISE. THE ALL-SUFFICIENT ANSWER IS CALVARY'S CROSS, WHERE IN FATHOMLESS GRACE JESUS, THE INCARNATE GOD, TOOK UPON HIMSELF THE BURDEN OF OUR SINS AND BORE THEM "IN HIS OWN BODY ON THE TREE, THAT WE...MIGHT LIVE FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS" (1 PETER 2:24)

IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN LED TO CALVARY'S CROSS, LET ME TAKE YOU THERE. HE DIED FOR YOU AND THEN ROSE AGAIN. BELIEVE IN HIM AND YOU WILL BE SAVED (1 COR. 1:21).

HE WAS NAILED TO THE CROSS, HE WAS NAILED TO THE CROSS!
O HOW MUCH HE WAS WILLING TO BEAR.
WITH WHAT ANGUISH AND LOSS, JESUS WENT TO THE CROSS,
BUT HE CARRIED MY SINS WITH HIM THERE.

THE PATHWAY TO HEAVEN BEGINS AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS. JESUS DIED FOR OUR SINS. I HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT TIME.

HAVE A BLESSED DAY
