GALATIANS 6:14 SAY'S "GOD FORBID THAT I SHOULD BOAST EXCEPT IN THE CROSS OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST." SOME CHRISTIANS MAKE IT A HABIT TO WEAR A CROSS. IT MAY BE ON A NECKLACE OR A LAPEL PIN. IT MAY BE WORN THOUGHTLESSLY AS A DECORATION OR PRAYERFULLY TO LET PEOPLE KNOW OF THE WEARER'S PERSONAL FAITH.
IN APRIL 2006, A METHODIST CHURCH IN THE CITY OF DUDLEY, ENGLAND, FOUND OUT THAT IT WOULD HAVE TO PAY A FEE TO PUT A CROSS IT'S NEW BUILDING. YES, A FEE WAS REQUIRED BECAUSE UNDER BRITISH LAW THE CROSS IS AN ADVERTISEMENT.
IT PROCLAIMS TO THE WORLD, WHETHER ON A PERSON OR A BUILDING, THAT THE BLOOD-STAINED CROSS OF CALVARY IS OUR ONLY HOPE OF FORGIVENESS AND SALVATION.
OUR BIBLE READING TODAY TELLS US OF THE CROSS-THE INSTRUMENT OF EXECUTION USED ON OUR SAVIOR (MATT. 27:22-26). THE CROWD IN ANGER SHOUTED, "LET HIM BE CRUCIFIED!
THE CROSS IS A SIGN OF HIS DEATH, AND MUST NOT BE TAKEN LIGHTLY. THIS SHOULD CAUSE US TO EXAMINE WHAT THE CROSS MEANS TO US. IS IT A WITNESS TO OUR ETERNAL HOPE IN THE SAVING DEATH OF JESUS ON CALVARY? OR IS IT SOMETHING ELSE?
WHILE WEARING THE CROSS MAY BE A CHALLENGING MARK OF DISCIPLESHIP, FAR MORE CHALLENGING IS OUR LORD'S COMMAND THAT WE "TAKE UP OUR CROSS DAILY" AND LEARN WHAT IT MEANS TO FOLLOW IN HIS FOOTSTEPS (LUKE 9:23). THAT INCLUDES A WILLINGNESS TO PRACTICE COSTLY DISCIPLESHIP.
TAKE UP THE CROSS AND FOLLOW ME,
I HEAR THE BLESSED SAVIOR CALL;
HOW CAN I MAKE A LESSER SACRIFICE
WHEN JESUS GAVE HIS ALL?

Happy Easter 2008
I have seen thousands of sunrise’s but today’s sunrise had new meaning for Jeri and I. With every sunrise, every new day, is a chance to start over, to be reborn anew. We were at the Calvary Chapel Montebello Sunrise (Sonrise) Service at Montebello Park this morning, for the first time, literally watching the sun come up as Pastor Pancho was speaking the word of God. I think everyone in attendance understood that 2000 years ago, Jesus, who had been crucified on the cross three days before and entombed, was resurrected on a day just like today. It connected us with him, if only metaphorically. The real connection is knowing that like Jesus, we too can be resurrected, reborn, by our faith and God’s Grace. Have a Happy Easter and enjoy your time with your family today.
Remembering our Grandson on Easter Sunday

Today is the anniversary of the only holiday we spent with our beautiful grandson Nathan. It was Easter of 2001. It was a beautiful sunny day, warm just like it is today. I was excited and happy that day to make all my grandchildren their Easter baskets, but most of all of course, our grandson Nathan, he got the biggest blue wicker basket, but they were all beautiful. He was our angel when he was born but we just didn't know it yet. It has been very hard and always will be, not having him here with us every holiday and every day that passes. There is a void in our hearts. I also want to say that for the short time that he was with us, he sure was very alert, always smiling and cooing and how I just loved holding him on my legs, with him just standing holding my hands, and just talking to him. We will miss him forever. It has been very hard for our daughter Meranda and always will be but all my husband and I can do is to keep our strength and our faith in our Father God. Wishing all my family and friends a Happy Easter. God Bless You.

Zane Newton
Rest in Peace, ZaneAfter first being reported kidnapped by authorities today, a young Bakersfield boy, Zane Newton , age 9, was found dead, near his home. He was buried alive in a cave in. His friends apparently panicked and made up a story about Zane being kidnapped. He might have been saved if these boys would have just told someone. It is beyond sad!
For those that have known me for years, you know this is very personal for me. I was a year or so older than Zane, when I was buried alive in similar cave in, in the backyard of my parents home. But for a few seconds, more, I would have ended up the same way. There aren’t too many people on this good Earth that know what that boy went through. I know. I don’t expect it to be any consolation to his parents or anyone else, but I can tell you from personal experience that from the moment of realization, when it occurs to you that you are not getting out of this, the mind or perhaps God, takes over and there is an eerie calmness, a quiet serenity. It’s been forty three years and I remember it like it was yesterday. It’s not something you can forget. I have more fear and suffering in my nightmares than I did while dying, and I was dying too
When I was pulled out, black and blue, by the Pico Rivera Fire Department, it was presumed that I was dead, but somehow I survived it. I don’t know how. I was under there a long time. I remember starting to fade, losing consciousness . I remember praying, not so much for myself but for my parents, I did not want them to know that I had died. I was praying for them to somehow, never find out. I didn’t want them to suffer. Perhaps Zane was saying the same prayer for his parents. I felt God’s presence that day. God was there with me that day. He was with Zane too. I am sure of it.
Is it fair to say that God saved me but not Zane? I don’t think that is how it works. Like my grandson Nathan who died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, perhaps God wanted Zane a little sooner. Perhaps he needed one more angel.
I was lucky. The boy that was with me, Ricky Lerma, and his younger brother, whose name I no longer recall, had the presence of mind to know that they were in over their head, and went for help. Those boys that left Zane will have the rest of their lives to think about what they did or didn't do. My condolences, thoughts and my prayers are with Zane's Parents and the entire family. AS WE APPROACH OUR SUNSET YEARS, WE MAY ASK OURSELVES, "CAN I STILL BE USEFUL TO GOD? IS THERE SOME SERVICE I CAN RENDER THAT WILL FILL MY DAYS WITH SIGNIFICANCE? AM I NEEDED?"
OF COURSE YOU ARE! GOD NEEDS YOU JUST AS HE NEEDED THE DONKEY TO CARRY HIM THROUGH THE STREETS OF JERUSALEM. HE HAS ALWAYS NEEDED SOMETHING OR SOMEONE TO GET HIS WORK DONE. HE STILL HAS USEFUL WORK FOR YOU TO DO.
JESUS CHRIST RODE INTO JERUSALEM ON A COLT. NOT ONLY DID THIS SPEAK OF HIS HUMILITY, IT ALSO DEMONSTRATED HIS LORDSHIP OVER CREATION. A YOUNG DONKEY HAS NOT BEEN TRAINED TO BEAR A RIDER. YET THIS COLT SUBMITTED TO THE MASTER'S AUTHORITY.

GRIEF IS MESSY - 1 THESS. 4:13-18 ***********
ON NOVEMBER 14, 1970, A PLANE CRASH TOOK THE LIVES OF MOST OF THE MARSHALL UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL TEAM, THE COACHING STAFF, AND MANY COMMUNITY LEADERS OF HUNTINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA. SEVENTY-FIVE LIVES WERE LOST IN THE CRASH, WHICH DEVASTATED THE UNIVERSITY AND THE COMMUNITY.
TWO OF THE PEOPLE WHO LOST LOVED ONES WERE PAUL GRIFFEN AND ANNIE CANTRELL. THEIR STORIES INTERTWINED BECAUSE GRIFFEN'S SON, CHRIS, WAS ANNIE'S FIANCE'. WHEN CHRIS DIED, THEIR LIVES WERE PLUNGED INTO A YEAR OF PAIN THAT SEEMED UNBEARABLE. WHY? BECAUSE, AS PAUL TOLD ANNIE IN THE FILM PORTRAYING THIS TRAGEDY. "GRIEF IS MESSY."

WE ALL HAVE THINGS WE NEED TO GET DONE TODAY, WHETHER WE'VE WRITTEN THEM DOWN OR NOT THEY'RE IMPORTANT FOR US TO ACCOMPLISH.
WHILE A TO-DO LIST IS HELPFUL, ANOTHER TYPE OF LIST IS EVEN MORE VALUABLE; A "TO BE" LIST. ALBERT EINSTEIN SAID, "TRY NOT TO BECOME A MAN OF SUCCESS BUT RATHER TO BECOME A MAN OF VALUE."

For St. Patty's Day: A Little Irish Humor
Six retired Irishmen were playing poker in O'Leary's apartment when
Paddy Murphy loses $500 on a single hand, clutches his chest, and drops
Dead at the table. Showing respect for their fallen brother, the other
Five continue playing standing up.
Michael O'Connor looks around and asks, "Oh, me boys, someone got to
Tell Paddy's wife. Who will it be?"
They draw straws. Paul Gallagher picks the short one. They tell him to
Be discreet, be gentle, don't make a bad situation any worse.
"Discreet??? I'm the most discreet Irishmen you'll ever meet.
Discretion is me middle name. Leave it to me."
Gallagher goes over to Murphy's house and knocks on the door. Mrs.
Murphy answers, and asks what he wants.
Gallagher declares, "Your husband just lost $500, and is afraid to come
Home."
"Tell him to drop dead!", says Murphy's wife.
"I'll go tell him." says Gallagher.

Down at the Guinness brewery"
"Oh, God no!" cries Brenda. "Please don't tell me."
"I must, Brenda. Your husband Shamus is dead and gone. I'm sorry.
Finally, she looked up at Tim. "How did it happen, Tim?"
"It was terrible, Brenda. He fell into a vat of Guinness Stout, and
Drowned."
"Oh my dear Jesus! But you must tell me true, Tim, did he at least go
Quickly?"
"Well, Brenda, no. In fact, he got out three times to pee."

Mary Clancy goes up to Father O'Grady after his Sunday morning service,
and she's in tears.
He says, "So what's bothering you, Mary my dear?"
She says, "Oh, Father, I've got terrible news. My husband passed away

Any last requests?"
She says, "That he did, Father."
The priest says, "What did he ask, Mary?"
" She says, "He said, 'Please Mary, put down that damn gun...' "

COURT SETS ATHEISTS' HOLIDAY

Have you heard about this case? Great answer from the
judge!
In Florida, an atheist became incensed over the
preparation of Easter and Passover holidays. He
decided to contact his lawyer about the discrimination
inflicted on atheists by the constant celebrations
afforded to Christians and Jews with all their
holidays, while atheists had no holiday to celebrate.
The case was brought before a judge. After listening
to the long passionate presentation by the lawyer, the
Judge banged his gavel and declared, "Case
dismissed!"
The lawyer immediately stood and objected to the
ruling and said, "Your Honor, how can you possibly
dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas,
Easter, and many other observances. The Jews have
Passover, Yom Kippur, and Hanukkah... yet my client
and all other atheists have no such holiday!"
The judge leaned forward in his chair and simply said,
"Obviously your client is too confused to even know
about, much less celebrate his own atheists' holiday!"
The lawyer pompously said, "Your Honor, we are unaware
of any such holiday for atheists. Just when might that
holiday be, your Honor?"
The judge said, "Well it comes every year on exactly
the same date---April 1st! Our calendar sets April 1st
as 'April Fools Day.' Consider what Psalm 14:1 states,
"The fool says in his heart, there is no God." Thus,
in my opinion, if your client says there is no God,
then by scripture, he is a fool, and April 1st is his
holiday! Now have a good day and get out of my courtroom!"

John Garza's Letter
This letter is through the Courtesy of Carol Herrington
A copy of this letter was given to me (and other members of the family) by the late John Garza's former wife Carol Herrington, who was kind enough to share it with us. We are all grateful. I consider this letter to be a historical family document, and will treat it as such. John Garza interviewed and spoke with many family members whom are now part of the De la O family history. Though any information should always be verified, this letter serves as a valuable source of historical family information. We are indebted to John.
I tried to be as faithful as possible when transcribing Primo John Garza’s letter, adding a period, comma or notation where I thought it was needed for clarification. The words are copied verbatim. Though De La O is usually spelled in upper case, John used lower case in his letter. For the record John is my second cousin. His grandfather Manuel De La O was my grandfather Santiago's older brother.

Dear Tia Lucy
Sorry I took so long to send you this information. It’s just that I needed to verify the information from some tapes I took when Mi Tio Ramon and Pantaleon were alive. And much of what is written comes from them. I also referred to things my mom told me.
But before I start, I need to also tell you that there are (3) versions of where Papa Pasqual de la O was born.
According to Mi Tio Juan de la O - he came from Chihauhau, Mex. but was born in Cuba.
According to mi Tio Ramon - he came from Spain to Cuba then to Chihuahua, Mex. and then to Tularosa, New Mex.
According to Mi Tio Pantaleon they came from Mexico and it was Papa Pasqual’s father who came from Spain than Mexico.
So pick one - personally Mi Tio Ramon’s version was more credible to me because , he had such a good memory and remembered in such detail, plus he wrote things down.
So here goes - Papa Pasqual de la O came to Tularosa N. Mex and later moved to Dona Ana N. Mexico, probably late 1700’s. He had several children.
Mano Cosme - ( My words-John used lines and arrows to refer to Cosme, Victor and Victor’s son Alejandro - Randy) All three were killed by Apaches by or in a place called Santa Barbara, New Mexico - 1860 - 1870.

Incidentally, Tia Martina and Arturo Campa had a son Arturo, also. And is the guy that taught romance Language at Univ. of Denver for many years. (I can’t make out the next word - Randy) he also authored several books on the subject.
Our family comes from Rafael de la O, who was born in Tularosa, New Mexico. Papa Rafael died in 1914 at the age of 84, which means he was born in 1930. He is buried in Salem, N. Mex. (1834) - (84 yrs old)
He was married to Margarita Madrid. She was born in Santo Tomas, N. Mex, but after the Rio Grande took the whole town in a flood, went to live in Anthony, Texas. She had a sister mama Marcos, she married a man with the last name of Montoya, and they had a son - Mi Tio Casimiro Montoya, who was Max Montoya’s father. Mama Margarita (Maita) died Dec 4, 1922 en Los Ranchos de Dona Ana, New Mexico and is buried there.
Papa Rafael and Mama Margarita had several children in the following order.
Mi Tia Sarapia Tellez - born in 1871, died e buried in Loveland, Colorado.
Mi Grandpa Manuel de la O, died e buried Greeley, Colo. Was born Dec 25, 1873
Mi Tia Nieves - (can’t make out the word - Randy) Looks like Hovie
Mi Tio Andres - buried in los Angeles
Mi Tia Juana - Martinez - married Mi Tio Pancho (Francisco), incidentally they had a daughter Juanita who is the one married to Jose Esquivel - another daughter Elvira Atencio

Mi Tia Gregoria - Martinez - buried in (Can‘t make out the name of the town- Randy) Ariz.
Mi Tio Macedonio - who was shot and killed accidentally by mi tia Grace

All this family was born in Dona Ana, County of Dona Ana, New Mexico.
We come from my Grandpa Manuel de la O born 12/25/73 (1873-Randy) who married Viviane Valenzuela. He died in 1945 in Greeley, Colorado and is buried there. She died May 30, 1920 at the age of 41 yrs old. She is buried on the grounds of the original Rancho de los de la O in Hatch, N. Mexico. Incidentally Tia, when the freeway I-10 was built, her grave was left approx 50 ft from the road. Graces are marked by a very high pile of river rock. Also Mi Tio Felipe is buried next to her. He froze to death December 23, 1923.
Anyway, they had several children in this order.

Finally I’d like to also tell you about mama Viviane’s family. Although she used the name Valenzuela, her. real name was Chavez. Her real father was a full blooded Apache from San Carlos, Ariz. Mi Tio Pantaleon and Mi Tio Ramon, always spoke of Tio Senovio and Benito Lee, very highly and I had the impression the family (de la O) were very close to them.
Well Tia, I hope you are able to get some information from the Mormons with this. But since our family was probably in Dona Ana, Tularosa, N. Mex as far back as probably the late 1700’s, and since they were probably all baptized, married etc, in those churches it’s possible to get the information. As you know, those old Catholic churches kept pretty detailed records.
Anyway, please give me a copy of anything you find out. I love you Tia, and I always think of you.

I tried to be as faithful as possible when transcribing Primo John Garza’s letter, adding a period, comma or notation where I thought it was needed for clarification. The words are copied verbatim. Though De La O is usually spelled in upper case, John used lower case in his letter. For the record John is my second cousin. His grandfather Manuel De La O was my grandfather Santiago's older brother.

Dear Tia Lucy
Sorry I took so long to send you this information. It’s just that I needed to verify the information from some tapes I took when Mi Tio Ramon and Pantaleon were alive. And much of what is written comes from them. I also referred to things my mom told me.
But before I start, I need to also tell you that there are (3) versions of where Papa Pasqual de la O was born.
According to Mi Tio Juan de la O - he came from Chihauhau, Mex. but was born in Cuba.
According to mi Tio Ramon - he came from Spain to Cuba then to Chihuahua, Mex. and then to Tularosa, New Mex.
According to Mi Tio Pantaleon they came from Mexico and it was Papa Pasqual’s father who came from Spain than Mexico.
So pick one - personally Mi Tio Ramon’s version was more credible to me because , he had such a good memory and remembered in such detail, plus he wrote things down.
So here goes - Papa Pasqual de la O came to Tularosa N. Mex and later moved to Dona Ana N. Mexico, probably late 1700’s. He had several children.
Mano Cosme - ( My words-John used lines and arrows to refer to Cosme, Victor and Victor’s son Alejandro - Randy) All three were killed by Apaches by or in a place called Santa Barbara, New Mexico - 1860 - 1870.

Incidentally, Tia Martina and Arturo Campa had a son Arturo, also. And is the guy that taught romance Language at Univ. of Denver for many years. (I can’t make out the next word - Randy) he also authored several books on the subject.
Our family comes from Rafael de la O, who was born in Tularosa, New Mexico. Papa Rafael died in 1914 at the age of 84, which means he was born in 1930. He is buried in Salem, N. Mex. (1834) - (84 yrs old)
He was married to Margarita Madrid. She was born in Santo Tomas, N. Mex, but after the Rio Grande took the whole town in a flood, went to live in Anthony, Texas. She had a sister mama Marcos, she married a man with the last name of Montoya, and they had a son - Mi Tio Casimiro Montoya, who was Max Montoya’s father. Mama Margarita (Maita) died Dec 4, 1922 en Los Ranchos de Dona Ana, New Mexico and is buried there.
Papa Rafael and Mama Margarita had several children in the following order.
Mi Tia Sarapia Tellez - born in 1871, died e buried in Loveland, Colorado.
Mi Grandpa Manuel de la O, died e buried Greeley, Colo. Was born Dec 25, 1873
Mi Tia Nieves - (can’t make out the word - Randy) Looks like Hovie
Mi Tio Andres - buried in los Angeles
Mi Tia Juana - Martinez - married Mi Tio Pancho (Francisco), incidentally they had a daughter Juanita who is the one married to Jose Esquivel - another daughter Elvira Atencio

Mi Tia Gregoria - Martinez - buried in (Can‘t make out the name of the town- Randy) Ariz.
Mi Tio Macedonio - who was shot and killed accidentally by mi tia Grace

All this family was born in Dona Ana, County of Dona Ana, New Mexico.
We come from my Grandpa Manuel de la O born 12/25/73 (1873-Randy) who married Viviane Valenzuela. He died in 1945 in Greeley, Colorado and is buried there. She died May 30, 1920 at the age of 41 yrs old. She is buried on the grounds of the original Rancho de los de la O in Hatch, N. Mexico. Incidentally Tia, when the freeway I-10 was built, her grave was left approx 50 ft from the road. Graces are marked by a very high pile of river rock. Also Mi Tio Felipe is buried next to her. He froze to death December 23, 1923.
Anyway, they had several children in this order.
