Classic Photo: Family Get Together

Family

This has to be from late 1954, maybe the holidays, or very early 1955.

That's my mother, Anita, seated on the left with my sister Evelyn and I, the woman standing is my aunt Angie (my father's sister), the man squatting, I'm almost certain, is her husband, my uncle Mauro Caldero. The man holding the guitar is my uncle Gilbert De La O (my father's younger brother), the woman in the center is his wife (at that time) my aunt Francis, whom I remember very well. I'm sure it was my father behind the camera.

Believe it or not, I have a very faint memory of this night. My mother has always been amazed at the things I remember. I'll describe something and she'll look at me and say "But you were just a baby!"

Classic Photo: Jeri and I with Meranda and Andrew

Randy and Jeri with the kids

It's "Throwback Thursday throughout social media today so here is my contribution #TBT: This photo, with Jeri and I with Meranda and Andrew, was taken at my mother's home in Pico Rivera, California, either late 1983 or early 1984 (I'm guessing).

We all still miss that house. Lot's of good times there with my mother and father and my sister and brother and later, with my mother, wife and my kids. Nothing lasts forever!

Rio Hondo Golf Course

Rio Hondo Golf Course

My father, Andrew De La O, was quite the golfer back in the day. He played in tournaments throughout Southern California and as far away as Florida. He enjoyed the sport. I golfed with my father numerous times when I was growing up and I did enjoy it but as an adult I have never golfed. It just was not my cup of tea.

This picture was taken, according to the date on the placard, in May of 1964, at the old Rio Hondo Golf Course in Pico Rivera, California. Which seems strange because according to Wikipedia, the course was built in 1965. I cannot find any other record of its existence. I might have to take a drive and see if it's still around just out of curiosity.

My father is second from the left. This was a company sponsored event with the Sherman and Bertram Company. My father and the man on the left of my father in the photo, Jesse Gonzalez, were top union officials in the Upholsterer's International Union (UIU) - my father eventually became the president of the UIU - and were either representing the company or the union in this event.

Addendum:  Seems I was confusing the Rio Hondo Golf Course in Downey, which was built in 1924, with the nearby Pico Rivera Municipal Golf, which was built in 1964. The above photograph was taken at the Rio Hondo Golf Course in Downey, California in 1965. Thanks to my friend Roger Helderle for the info.

Mammoth Bound

On the Road

My wife Jeri took this photo as I was filling up my Landcruiser somewhere along the 395 heading to the Mammoth Lakes. She and kids were inside. It was 1979. I bought the Landcruiser in March. Gas had reached one dollar the day I bought it. It seemed unbelievable that gas could  get that high. little did we know.

This was the first vacation I took since I began working at Douglas Aircraft. We were all excited. I fished all the Mammoth Lakes and the June Lake Loop on that trip. I broke my favorite Garcia-Mitchell pole on that trip too. Still, it was a great trip and we made the most of it.

A two for one. Dinner on Thursday and a big breakfast with the left overs served with eggs on Friday. It's the only way we know. It's our Thanksgiving tradition passed on from my parents.Simple but filling!
